No Food Waste wins special award

No Food Waste, the Coimbatore-based NGO, has won the Special Reorganisation Award, Rashtriya Swayamsiddh Samman, given by the JSPL Foundation (Jindal Groups), and United Nations Global Compact Network India (UNGCN), the Indian arm of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

The founder of the NGO received the award in New Delhi from Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Union Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (Independent Charge) & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India.

The NGO recently released its report card for the year 2015. During the entire calendar year, No Food Waste collected 33,079 servings of excess food. About 5,000 people were fed every month. 11.01 metric tons of CO2 emission was saved. 12,598 kg of edible quality food was saved from being dumped in landfills and Rs.16,53,950 worth food was saved at the rate of Rs.50 per meal. The NGO says that Rs.3.50 is the cost of recovering and distributing per plate of a meal.

No Food Waste also made official that they will begin operations in Andhra Pradesh too. Under the leadership of T. Balabrahmam, the tasks of collecting and distributing the food for the needy started recently in Andhra Pradesh.
