In a dare move, TASMAC outlets that were closed by TASMAC officials for not participating in auctions as per regulations, are still operating through the backdoor.

According to sources, there are 306 TASMAC outlets in the districts, with 165 in the Northern region and 145 in the South. These outlets are auctioned each year by the Department officials and the auction rate is fixed based on the sales.

However, sources claim that because of political influence, the auction that should have been held in November 2015 has not been arranged till date. TASMAC officials are perturbed because they have reportedly suffered a loss of around Rs. 2 crore. Even if a base price of Rs. 50,000 is fixed for an outlet, the government can generate revenue to the tune of many crores.

Yet, this was not happening and the officials had reportedly sent a circular stating that all outlets will be closed. Accordingly, all outlets were closed on Thursday. This was done even when shop owners lured the officials with money. The keys were taken by the officials.

However, the outlet owners are carrying on their business through the backdoor.

When Covai Post tried reaching the officials regarding the issue, there was no response. However, an official who refused to comment on the issue said that they were quizzed by higher authorities as to how the issue had gone to the knowledge of the media.

The official further claimed that they had “strict directions” to not to disclose any matters to the media or public.
