The opposition parties in Tirupur district have called for a one-day strike on August 4 for paying homage to Gandhiyan Sasi Perumal and to also demand for total prohibition in Tamil Nadu.

Following the joint committee meeting of the opposition parties in Tirupur, a resolution was passed calling for a one day strike on Tuesday. “Sasi Perumal died during his protests demanding total prohibition in the state,” the resolution read. The strike was being called for in order to pay tribute to the activist and to prohibit the sale of liquor in the state. The resolution also called upon all the industries, traders and public to extend their support to the protest.

Representatives from various political parties, including Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), the Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) took part in the meeting.
