Coimbatore: E-commerce has brought about a sea change in eating habits. After Flipkart and Amazon, online food apps are creating waves through its food delivery service. Though a couple of outlets like Dominos, KFC and Pizza hut provide home delivery services, this online food apps appear to have an edge because it offers more choices to the customers.

People do not need visit a restaurant because it has all come down to the click of a button. With no minimum order and distance, Swiggy that has recently launched in Coimbatore has captured the market in a unique way. The online ordering and food delivery company through its app gives users choice to select cuisine, restaurant and order amount of their choice. Once a user creates an order cart, it will show the nearest available restaurants matching the consumer tastes.

Harsh Lalka, who owns Bombay Chat in the posh RS Puram area says, “It’s not only about one particular company but all other food apps as well like Zomato, Scootsy, Food Panda etc.. who give discounts and free delivery. It is very beneficial for customers because they can sit right on their couches, relax and enjoy the food without the hassle of time and traffic.”

If income is Rs 2,000 offline on a daily basis and services are listed online, income should double, such is the benefit received.

S.Santosh who is the assistant manager of Jonah’s Bistro restaurant at Chennai says, “Before we used to get only 10-15 online orders but once we joined with online food portals the number has increased drastically with a minimum of 25 and maximum of 55 orders on a given day. Weekdays though see a surge in number which is not much of concern.” The restaurant has greatly benefitted because of these online food delivery companies.

The manager of Aasife Biryani in Chennai said online food delivering firms have created a great business opportunity in the sector.

However, Parmeshwaran of Yummy Hut Family restaurant had a different version to share. He said, “We don’t have tieup with any of these online food delivery services. Whatever order comes we take it directly through phone calls and have our own delivery boys for fulfilling the order.”

“Unlike Swiggy or other online delivery companies, we have a minimum order of Rs 250 along with a packaging charge of Rs 10 and were once cheated by an online food company where the restaurant’s bill was manipulated and the customers ended up paying extra. We have no profit in tying up with these companies,” he added.

The functioning of these online portals is smart and simple. Once an order is placed online, it will call up the nearest restaurant asking them to keep the parcel ready. Once the parcel is picked and delivered to the customer, they pay money to the restaurant online while simultaneously receiving it from the customer. Customers can keep track of their orders right from the time of order till the delivery doorstep.
