Coimbatore : A 51-year-old brain-dead sportsmaster of a school in Pollachi became instrumental in giving new lease of life to nine persons, after his vital organs were transplanted on them.

S Anandhakumar of Pethanaickanur Government School met with an accident on December 7 and was brought to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH).

As he did not respond to the treatment and was declared brain dead on December 9, his wife Santhi and relatives came forward to donate the organs, a hospital statement said on Monday.

The kidneys, liver, heart valve, lungs, eyes, bone and skin were harvested yesterday by a special team.

While the liver and a kidney were transplanted at KMCH, the heart valve and lungs were sent to Chennai, eyes and the other kidney were sent to two hospitals here. The skin and bone were sent to a private hospital in the city, thus giving new lease of life for nine persons.
