Over 20,000 to take part in Wipro Chennai Marathon on Dec 11

The fifth edition of the Wipro Chennai Marathon (TWCM16) will be held on December 11. More than 20,000 runners are expected to take part in the event, organised by Chennai Runners.

The marathon will comprise four events – a full marathon (42.2 km), a half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km run for men and women and a fun run for differently-abled children. The marathon will commence from MRTS station, Madhya Kailash at 4 a.m. The prize money will be Rs 17.20 lakh for all the four events.

Giving out details to mediapersons here on Tuesday, TWCM16 race director Deepa Bharatkumar said apart from usual aid stations, there will be ‘Cheer Zones’ at all important junctions this time. “There will be musical bands to cheer up the runners and live photo updates in social media,” she said.

“The Wipro Chennai Marathon now ranks among the best sporting event in the country and this year’s response has strengthened our endeavour to make TWCM a memorable event,” Wipro Limited vice-president K.V. Suresh said.

This year’s edition will see a real time runner tracking through a TWCM app and RFID (Radio-frequency identification) based timing technology for official and personal timing. The participants’ T-shirts specifically designed by 2GO having reflective tapes embedded on them for safety purpose was launched at the press meet.

The Chennai Runners group was formed in 2006 with the goal of bringing healthy running to the masses.
