PDS rice smuggled to Kerala, seized

Over a tonne of rice, issued under PDS, was seized near Pollachi in two separate incidents last night and on Monday morning.Officials of Food and Civil Supplies who were on routine vehicle check near Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in Pollachi, noticed a person fleeing after abandoning his moped.
A search revealed 250 kg of PDS rice loaded on the moped. Officials took both the rice and vehicles into their custody, police said.
In another incident in the early hours of Monday, a team of police on morning rounds, noticed a van moving in a suspicious manner in the border area and stopped it. The team found some bags of rice hidden behind, weighing around 800 kgs, they said.
On information, officials from Civil Supplies rushed there and seized the rice and handed over two persons, identified as Prakash, hailing from Kerala, and Kannan of Pollachi to the police. Further investigations are on.
