Athi Thamilar Katchi (ATK) today sought the intervention of the District Collector that persons belonging to SC and Backward Classes be considered for appointment of archakas in temples in the district.

A procession of activists, led by State ATK Vice-President, Ashokan submitted a memorandum, which condemned the recent Supreme Court directive to appoint archakas as per Agama system, which was totally against social justice and equality.

He said that those following Agama system were considered based on their birth as higher caste, which was against the constitutional rights of the citizens.

Arguing that a person from Scheduled Caste could be selected to the highest post in India, Ashokan said that despite learning vedas and shastras, the person from SC was banned from entering the sanctum sanctorum of a temple.
