As part of the Pongal celebrations, the 12 foot high Nandi idol at the Big Temple, a world heritage monument, was today adorned with 750 kg of vegetables, fruits, flowers and sweets.
The second day of Pongal festival is celebrated as ‘maattu pongal’ to commemorate the role of livestock which helps the farmers in agricultural activities. The Nandi idol is decorated with edible items denoting the importance of cattle in farming.
Special abhishekam and deeparadhanai were performed to the Nandi last evening. ‘Go’ puja was also performed at the temple for 108 cows today. The cows were garlanded and dhoti and saris were tied.
“The Nandi idol was decorated with 750 kg of vegetables, fruits, flowers and sweets. The decoration began early in the morning and several priests and volunteers were involved. All the items used for decoration were donated by devotees. The items used for decoration would be distributed to devotees as prasad,” an assistant commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department, said.
