Prime accused in Varapuzha sex scandal gets 18-yr RI

Kochi: A city court has sentenced Shobha John to 18 years rigorous imprisonment and Col (retd) Jayrajan Nair to 11 years in the Varapuzha sex racket case involving a minor.

The Ernakulam Additional Sessions court slapped a fine of Rs 1.1 lakh on Shobha.

Six others accused in the case including, the victim’s sister and her husband, were absolved for lack of evidence against them while one of the accused died during the course of the trial.

There are 32 cases registered in this and Shobha is the prime accused in most of them. Trial is on in five of them.

She was behind trapping the girl. The victim was taken to several places in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in 2011, and was sexually abused by several persons including Jayachandran Nair.
