Tension prevailed in several parts of the city with irked protesters from Hindu outfits demonstrating against the killing of Hindu Munnani leader Sasikumar.

The procession saw ugly communal turns as members from both the Hindu and the Muslim communities pelted stones at each other neat Kottaimedu and on the Mettupalayam Road during the procession of mortal remains.

Attacks were reported on shops, four mosques, a church in Rathinapuri, a meat stall in the vicinity and at a Muslim house near Rathinapuri.

More than 10 police vehicles, 20 government buses, two-wheelers and auto rickshaws were also attacked.

An unofficial bandh was called, and all the shops, hotels and restaurants remained closed for a large part of the day. Shops that were opened came under attack and there was a police lathi charge near Vincent Road.

Munnani spokesman Sasikumar was hacked to death by unidentified persons while he was on his way home, near Subramaniapalayam, around midnight on Thursday.

Outfit members staged demonstrations at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where his mortal remains were kept. Part of the Trichy road adjacent to the CMCH was closed as tension prevailed.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police RV Ramyabharathy claimed that six special teams have been deployed to nab the culprits.
