About 300 workers of Salem steel plant staged a demonstration, protesting against the Centre’s decision to privatise
it and inviting a global tender as part of this.

According to AITUC sources, the quality steel-producing plant has nearly 2,000 workers, with many ancillary units. As part of the privatisation plan, the Centre has decided to float a global tender.

The workers also urged the Tamil Nadu Government to exert pressure on the Centre to withdraw the tender and bring in a legislation opposing privatisation.

The workers threatened to intensify the agitation and would resort to rail rook, they said.
