Members of the Student’s Union for a Social Change attempted to siege the BSNL office near the District Collectorate here on Monday, demanding to release JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested under sedition charges and remanded in custody earlier this month.

Protests were held across the country after the JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police under sedition charges earlier this month. Media reports also claim that the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar under sedition charges was wrong as the video footage that the Delhi Police used against Kumar as evidence was found to be tampered with.

The issue was intensified further when Kanhaiya Kumar along with the journalists were attacked by lawyers inside the Patiala House Court, New Delhi, when he was taken to be produced before the court. The Delhi police was accused of not giving adequate protection to the accused, and of not having arrested the lawyers who carried out the assault.

The protesting members of the Student’s Union for a Social Change alleged that the case is being mishandled by the RSS and other religious outfits in order to create a stir among the college students. “We demand that the centre stops listening to religious ideologies and release Khanaiya Kumar immediately,” a member of the union said.

The members were detained by the city police and were released in the evening.
