The City Corporation reclaimed 1.3 Km road encroached by a Sahara Properties near Saravanampatti in the heart of the city, an official said.
The housing developer has handed over 1.5 Km road to the Vilankurichi panchayat way back in 2008, measuring 24 metres in one section, 18 and nine metres in another section, official sources said.
However, the land owner started using the road by putting up agate for enterring into the housing sites, as a result 3.5 Km road between Sathyamandalam Road and Keeranatham was totally blocked for the last eight years, even as the panchayat was annexed with the city corporation five years ago.
Based on a complaint, the corporation officials started removing the encroachments this morning and the work is likely to be over by tomorrow. A shed was also demolished and some building materials dumped there seized.
The encroachers had not not responded to the notice to vacate the place within 48 hours, the source said.
The new road, which will be open from Monday will help to decongest traffic.
The officials also demolished a few shops that were encroached near the village administrative office at the G P traffic signal in Gandhipuram.
