A group of residents in Madukkarai today staged picketing on the road leading to Selvapuram, protesting against the administration for opening a TASMAC outlet in their area.

Though the administration had some time ago given assurance to not to shift the liquor outlet in their area, a new shop was started functioning from yesterday.

Condemning this, nearly 100 residents, mostly women, squatted on the middle of the road and raised slogans against the Government, police said.

As vehicular traffic got disrupted, police rushed to the spot and asked them to disperse, which however, was not heeded by the agitators.

Senior police officials managed to convince them and assured to take up the matter with the authorities, after which they dispersed.
