A 46-year-old rice smuggler from Pollachi, who was in the Coimbatore Central Prison as a suspect, was booked under Goondas Act for his repeated involvement in the smuggling of ration rice to be sent from here to Kerala.

The Pollachi Police on 26.03.2016 arrested C. Kalai Selvan, a resident of Vettaikaranpudhur, while he was smuggling 200 kg of ration rice, which was meant to be sent to Kerala.

Further investigations revealed that Kalai Selvan was a repeated history sheeter in smuggling ration rice to Kerala and also retrieved 2.55 tons of ration rice from him and remanded him in custody.

Based on a suggestion made by the Pollachi Police, the Collector, on Wednesday, ordered to book him under the Goondas Act and he was transported to the convict’s quarters in the Central Prison on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the District Administration had issued a strict warning against all those who intend to sell or smuggle ration rice provided free by the State Government.
