Thanjavur: Officials of the static surveillance team in Thanjavur today seized demonetised currencies to the tune of Rs 2.50 lakh taken in a car by a building contractor without valid documents.

With the election mode code of conduct being in force in view of the November 19 elections for Thanjavur constituency, the static surveillance team led by Krishnamurthy, along with CRPF personnel, conducted vehicle checks at Pattukottai bypass in Thanjavur today, when the officials stopped the car and found the demonetised currency notes.

The occupant of the car, identified as S Irshad Ahamed, 33, a resident of Anna Nagar in Trichy, claimed that he was taking the money to Nagapattinam to disburse it as wages to construction workers who are involved in the renovation of a cinema theatre there. As he possessed no valid documents for the money, the car along with the money was taken to the Thanjavur taluk office.

Later, on the orders of tahsildar R Gurumurthy, who is also the assistant returning officer for Thanjavur constituency, officials deposited the seized money in the sub treasury. The tahsildar said the money would be returned on presenting valid documents for it.
