The car with the cash was proceeding to Malappuram in Kerala. The members were returning from Chennai with the money they collected from the sale of gold jewels there.

According to police, when the vehicle neared Nilambur bypass road around 4.30 a.m. a five member-gang in a jeep asked them to stop the vehicle so that they could carry out a search. They asked the four – identified as Sisas, the driver, Anand, Mushir and Mohammed Ibrahim, to get into the jeep, while two of the gang members, followed the jeep in the car that came from Chennai. The four were asked to get down at Pollachi Road Junction and the five-member gang fled with the cash and car, police added.

On information, Anwar, the businessman in Malappuram arrived lodged a complaint with the Madukkarai police. The jeep in which the gang was travelling reportedly had fake registration number, the complaint said.
