The third day of the 41st session of AITUC today demanded that the national water policy should be re-drafted to ensure that even the poor people of India get clean drinking water. It also added that access to safe drinking water must be a fundamental right.
The resolution said that the policy introduced by UPA Government posed water as a commodity to be priced according to its cost, and access to safe drinking water must be a fundamental right to the public, and hence the present policy should be redrafted.
Pointing out that the current policy emphasised private investment in the drinking water supply sector through public-private partnership, the resolution said that it created access to potable drinking water to the masses.
Another resolution demanded that along with clean drinking water, the government should also include decent pay and decent work for every citizen as fundamental rights to be incorporated in the Constitution of India.
Other demands include land and financial aid to workers to build houses, a national policy on domestic workers, setting up of state-level welfare boards for domestic workers, regular enhancement of the minimum wages, a monthly pension of Rs.3,000, comprehensive policy for the welfare of the migrant workers, and social security for them including compensation for accidents and death.
