Suspicious over the death of her sister, who allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison, a woman from Coimbatore staged a sit-in protest inside the District Collectorate in Coimbatore on Monday.
According to M. Dhanalakshmi from Eechanari, her sister T. Sakunthala Devi, who was living with her in-laws in Pollachi, died on the way to the hospital on October 18. “They said that she had consumed poison. But I believe that she was killed by her in-laws because of property issues,” Dhanalakshmi said.
Sakunthala was frequently harassed by her in-laws, even after begetting four children.
She further added that despite several complaints filed with the Vadakipalayam Police Station in Pollachi, the cops have failed to take action on her in-laws even after her death.
“I demand they conduct second postmortem to find out what really happened to my sister,” said Dhanalakshmi.
Dhanalakshmi also added that her sister Sakunthala Devi and she had petitioned the District Administration previously, claiming that Sakunthala Devi’s life was in danger. However, no action was taken by the authorities.
“Had they taken action, she would have been alive now,” Dhanalakshmi said.
Dhanalakshmi, who staged in a sit-in protest, was detained by the city police who were present at the Collectorate.
Sakunthala is survived by her husband, three daughters, and a son.
