The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Sri Krishna College of Technology (SKCT), Coimbatore, joined hands with the Coimbatore chapter of Quality Circle Forum of India and organised a two-day workshop on ‘Lean tools and Implementation’ at the college premises. The workshop was attended by more than 60 students from across the state.

At the workshop, participants were trained to use tools like value stream mapping, 5S, Kaizen, Poka Yoke, project charter, and line balancing, using real time industrial scenarios.

Yogeshwari, Secretary, Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) – Coimbatore chapter, was the chief guest. In her address, she said, “All industries focus on producing quality products with minimum wastage. Controlling and minimising the wastes during the production is the best way to save raw materials. It will, in turn, reduce the production cost. The price of the product is fixed based on the production cost. Customers these days are expecting two things – buying a quality product with all advantages, and getting that product at the affordable cost.”

Research and development has a big role to play when it comes to minimising wastage while manufacturing a product. Yogeshwari said that engineering colleges should partner with R&D teams and help industries minimise waste while producing goods. She added that the industry must use academia to carry out their research.
