With about 1,000 MW surplus wind power available for sale to other states, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has asked the centre to create a dedicated inter-state green energy corridor to sell the excess electricity.

Tamil Nadu currently has wind power of about 7600 MW capacity, which amounts to 27 percent of the country’s total installed wind capacity. The state also has an installed capacity of 1142 MW of solar power.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Jayalalithaa said that Tamil Nadu has already met its renewable purchase obligation, and pointed out that many states in India, that are unable to meet the renewable purchase obligation (EPO), are now approaching Tamil Nadu for assistance in meeting their EPO.

In order to sell the surplus wind electricity to states that need renewable energy, she said that it was important “that a dedicated inter-state green energy corridor is established.”

She also asked the Prime Minister to speed up the process of establishing the inter-state green energy corridor to enable Tamil Nadu to transmit renewable power of 1000 MW to other states which are in need of such power.

Jayalalithaa said that state is aiming at adding an additional 4500 MW of wind power and 5000 MW of solar power over the next five years.
