Tamil Nadu police on Friday did not rule out the possibility that IPS officer N. Harish could have committed suicide. This comes a day after the death of the officer under mysterious circumstances.

According to a senior investigation official, the preliminary report indicated that Harish might have consumed excessive alcohol before his death.

Moreover, police intelligence sources also said that the investigation team, which recovered a few anti-depressant tablet covers from Harish’s room, also suspect the IPS officer might have been taking the pills along with the alcohol.

“A three-doctor team has conducted post mortem in the afternoon. The whole autopsy was video graphed. We are waiting for the report”, the senior investigation official, who is probing the death of Harish, said.

Stating that the report would be submitted in the next couple of days, the official said that the investigating team was looking into all angles, including a suicide bid, of the 2009 batch IPS officer, a native of Karnataka, who was posted in Tamil Nadu.

The 32-year old Harish was found dead in his room at the Police Officers’ Mess at Egmore in Chennai on Thursday. His body was sent to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for a post mortem.

However, Harish’s family members said that the death could have been caused by a cardiac arrest. Harish’s father N. Nagaraj, who spoke to the media here, said his son was most likely to have suffered a heart attack. “He is a brave person and there is no way he could have committed suicide”, he added.

The death of his son having left him badly shaken, Nagaraj said that Harish, who used to keep in touch with the family regularly, did not complain about any pressure from his senior officers. “He was busy engaged in shopping and other works related to his marriage,” Nagaraj said.

Though Harish’s family have not lodged a police complaint, they have urged the Tamil Nadu Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the death.
