TNAU releases price forecast for vegetables till July

The Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies, a part of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), has released the expected prices for the summer vegetables, to help the farmers fix the prices, between May and July.

The numbers are based on the prices of vegetables that prevailed in Ottanchatram and Coimbatore wholesale markets for the last 12 years.

Tomato: Average farm-gate price of tomato during summer would be around Rs.18 to Rs.20 per kg in Coimbatore.

India produced 163.85 lakh tons of tomatoes in 2014-15 over 7.67 lakh hectares. According to the First Advance Estimates of National Horticulture Board (NHB), the 2015-16 production is expected to be around 182.86 lakh tons from 7.77 lakh hectares.

In Tamil Nadu, 0.25 lakh hectares of land was under tomato cultivation in 2014-15. 3.28 lakh tons was the total production. Vellore, Salem, Dharmapuri, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Dindigul, Erode and Krishnagiri are the major tomato producing districts.

Brinjal: Average farm-gate price of brinjal during summer would be around Rs.22-24 per kg per kg in Coimbatore.

India produced 125.89 lakh tons of brinjal in 2014-15 over 6.73 lakh hectares. According to the First Advance Estimates of National Horticulture Board (NHB), the 2015-16 production is expected to be around 127.80 lakh tons from 6.70 lakh hectares.

In Tamil Nadu, 0.11 lakh hectares of land was under brinjal cultivation in 2014-15. 1.05 lakh tons was the total production. Dindigul, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Theni, Pudukottai, Vellore, and Trippur are major brinjal-producing districts.

Ladies’ finger (Okra): Average farm-gate price of ladies’ finger during summer would be around Rs.23-25 per kg per kg in Coimbatore.

India produced 57.09 lakh tons of ladies’ finger in 2014-15 over 5.04 lakh hectares. According to the First Advance Estimates of National Horticulture Board (NHB), the 2015-16 production is expected to be around 57.94 lakh tons from 5.04 lakh hectares.

In Tamil Nadu, 0.08 lakh hectares of land was under okra cultivation in 2014-15. 0.57 lakh tons was the total production. Dindigul, Coimbatore, Salem, Vellore, Kancheepuram, and Dharmapuri are major okra-producing districts
