Tribals go on hunger strike demanding closure of liquor outlet

With the appeals to close the liquor shop located on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border falling on deaf ears, members of the tribal communities of areas around Anaikatti have launched a hunger strike early in the morning today, demanding the closure of the TASMAC outlet. The relay hunger protests will continue until March 20, the protesters have said.
According to them, alcoholism was ruining the health and financial well-being of their tribe members.
25 women, along with their children have gone on the fast, demanding government intervention. Valliammal, the leader of the protest group said that a large portion of the wages earned by the men of the family was spent on liquor, throwing the family into hardship and poverty.
Most of the members of the tribe and those in the vicinity are employed as daily wage labourers in construction industry. They cross the border to spend their hard-earned money on liquor.
A few days ago, the protesters had submitted memorandums to the district collectors of Coimbatore and Palakkad, but no action was taken.
