Two women were arrested for kidnapping a four-and-a-half-year-old boy in the city.

According to police, the boy Iniyan, son of a knitwear manufacturer in Tirupur and staying with his aunt here in Ramanathapuram, went missing since Thursday afternoon.

Even as search by his aunt Amutha remained futile, she received a call from a woman demanding Rs. 50,000 for the boy’s release.

Amutha called back the number, which was answered by a man, who told Amutha that two women, who had come to his telephone booth with a boy, made the call.

By the time Amutha reached the booth, the women abandoned Iniyan there and fled.

Based on Amutha’s complaint, police zeroed in and arrested 54-year old Kamatchi, who was working in Amutha’s house for the last four years and her friend Zarina Bhanu.

Both were produced before a court that remanded them custody.
