Two labourers died of food poisoning and five others are undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore, after they reportedly consumed poisonous vegetables.

A group of labourers from Manapparai in Tiruchirapalli district had come to work for various road projects and were camping near Poondi, some 30 kilometres from Coimbatore. Some of the workers plucked a few vegetables that were growing on an open site, and prepared a side dish last Friday.

Soon after consuming the food, they complained of vomiting and were brought and admitted to the Government Hospital in the evening. 45-year-old Palanisamy died last night without responding to treatment. 60-year-old Santhanam died early today, police said.

Ponnan (57), Velmuguran (26), Muthusamy (70), Velappan (38), and Periyasamy (55) are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
