COIMBATORE: Two female elephants were found dead in the forest areas of Coimbatore and Nilgiris district on Tuesday.

According to Forest Department sources, a 30-year-old elephant was found dead in Mielmukkai area in Sirumugai forest range.

On information, officials, including a veterinarian, rushed to the spot and preliminary inquiry revealed that the death was due to illness. A carcass of a three-year-old female elephant was found in an area coming under Needle Rock in Gudalur in Nilgiris district, they said.

The officials suspect the death could be due to lack proper food and water. Autopsy could reveal the real cause of the death of both the elephants, department sources said.
