Thanjavur: Two youth riding a motorbike were fatally knocked down by a speeding car on an over-bridge here on Sunday night.

Sarath alias Sarathkumar (24), a resident of Oothangudi village in Tiruvarur district, and with his friend Padmapriyan (20), of the same area, were proceeding to Thanjavur from Tiruvarur when the mishap occurred.

The motorbike was climbing the over-bridge on the right side instead of the left side at Gnanam Nagar near Mariamman temple when the car bound for Ammapettai from Thanjavur hit the two-wheeler. On impact, both Sarath and Padmapriyan were thrown off the motorbike and died on the spot.

On being informed by the public, Thanjavur taluk police rushed there, retrieved the bodies and sent them to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Police have registered a case and further investigation is on.

Sarath was working in a petrol bunk in Nagapattinam while Padmapriyan had finished a Diploma in Catering Technology.
