UGC nod for new research centre at Bharathiar University

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given its approval for the establishment of a new research centre at the Department of Physics, Bharathiar University, in Coimbatore, under the scheme of “Centres with Potential for Excellence in Particular Areas” for the 12th plan period.

The department is one of the 9 centres approved for Science and Technology, and Humanities and Social Sciences, at national level.

The Department, with a team of scientists from the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Bio-Technology, and Nano Science and Technology, will perform research and advanced studies in physics for the development of solar energy materials, and on devices to improve the efficiency of the solar cells.

The University was recently re-accredited for the third consecutive time with “A” grade by NAAC and secured 14th rank at national level, under the National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, and placed first in the state, among all the Indian universities.

The Department of Physics is renowned for its academic calibre, research activities and accomplishments. It was identified by the Tamil Nadu Government as Centre of Excellence for post-graduate studies with financial support of Rs.2.5 crores for creating and establishing a state-of-the-art advanced research laboratory.
