Dejected over his inability to repay loan to a nationalised bank, a 65-year old farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticides early today near Karamadai.

According to police, Ramasamy had borrowed Rs.60 lakh as loan to set up a farm in his village Vadavalli, some 35 km from here, in 2014.

Ramasamy had repaid only Rs. 6.5 lakh in December last and was dejected over his mounting interest amount. Meanwhile, senior bank officials met Ramasamy in March last and asked to arrange for the repayment of loans with interest, they said.

As usual, Ramasamy went to his farm to spray pesticides early today but did not return at his normal time. His family members, who went in search saw Ramasamy lying on the ground and immediately shifted him to a private hospital in Karamadai, where he died on admission.
