All the unmanned level crossings in the Salem Division will be eliminated by 2018 end, a top Southern Railway Official said today.

Of the 72 unmanned level crossings 22 were closed last year and 20 will be eliminated this year by constructing limited use subways and three by manning, Salem Divisional Railway Manager Harishankar Verma said.

There are 53 ULCs in Salem-Vridhachalam section, four in Erode-Trichy Fort section, 10 in Karur-Dindigul, one in Coimbatore-Mettupalayam and four in Mettupalayam-Ooty.

As part of observing level crossing awareness week which ends tomorrow, road users have been requested to exercise caution while using manned and unmanned level crossings.

Various awareness programmes and road shows were conducted and pamphlets distributed, Verma said.
