A major calamity was averted at the Chennai International Airport on Thursday when a vehicle caught fire close to the fuel depot of the ONGC at the airport complex.

It was a baggage handling vehicle belonging to a private airliner. There were tense moments even as fire service personnel rushed to the spot and doused the flames.

According to airport officials, no injury was reported in the mishap. They said baggage was being loaded onto the Colombo-bound Sri Lankan Airlines flight. It had 124 passengers on board and was scheduled for departure at 9.30 a.m., when the battery in the baggage handling vehicle caught fire due to an electrical short circuit.

The aircraft was also parked just behind the fuel depot of the ONGC at the airport complex.
