Vigilant gatekeeper honoured for averting rail mishap

Coimbatore : Southern Railway on Tuesday appreciated the alertness of a gatekeeper for averting what could have been a major train mishap between Sulur Road-Somanur on the outskirts.

Diwakar Kumar Singh was on night duty at level crossing 140 between Sulur Road and Somanur on the Coimbatore-Erode section on October 10 and heard an unusual sound when Coimbatore Mannargudi Chemmozhi Express passed around 1 am.

On inspecting the track, Singh found a rail crack near the gate.After safeguarding the track, as per rules, he brought the matter to the notice of Somanur station master, who in turn passed the information to the section engineers and higher officials, a statement said.

Speed restriction was imposed and by 2.40 am and the track was restored and trains operated with normal speed from 3.05 am.

Southern Railway General Manager R K Kulshrestha presented an award of Rs 2,000 along with a merit certificate to Singh.
