Woman activist held in Salem for protest against Greenlane project

Coimbatore: A woman social activist, Valarmathi, was arrested today, when she along with a few villagers protested against officials who had come to measure land to be acquired for the Green Lane project near Achanguttapatti on the outskirts of Salem.

Valarmathi, a student of in Periyar University, was jailed here for nearly a fortnight last July for distributing pamphlets among villagers opposing the hydrocarbon and methane projects in Neduvasal and Kadiramangalam.

As the officials, accompanied by a few policemen, reached Achanguttapatti from where the project is expected to start, Valarmathi and the villagers raised slogans and entered into
argument with them. Police took all of them into custody.
