Coimbatore : A 60-year-old woman on Tuesday attempted to commit suicide by hanging herself after tying her sari from a tree on the District Collectorate premises. She was seeking her deceased husband’s pension.

Ramlath alias Kannamal’s husband Mohammed, working in the Highways Department died some 10 years ago and his pension was going to his first wife.

Since the first wife also died some time back, her argument was that the pension had to be provided to her and despite many requisitions she was not receiving the amount.

Protesting against the apathy of the administration, Ramlath came to the Collectorate this morning and climbed a tree and attempted to hang herself from her sari, police said.

However, some people nearby noticed the incident, pulled her down and handed her over to police on duty there.

Ramlath said she would continue her agitation till the administration took steps to provide her the pension.
