Ooty: A 47-year-old woman was trampled to death by an elephant today in Dharmagiri near Gudalur, about 80 kms from here.

Leena alias Mary was going to church this morning when she saw an elephant on her path. As she tried to run for shelter, the elephant caught hold of her with its trunk and trampled her with its front leg, police said. When people nearby raised an alarm, the pachyderm ran towards the jungles.

Though relatives and others rushed Leena to the Gudalur Government Hospital, she died on the way, police said.
