Having been suppressed by the patriarchal society, women of the world broke the shackles and came out all shining, and though many Women’s Day celebrations surfaced in the years 1909 and 1910, March 8 (celebrated in 1914) is treated as the official Women’s Day all over the world. It is the day the women broke the rooftop and shouted in unison that they are no less than men.
Mother,
Sister,
Friend,
Lover,
Wife,
Daughter,
She gifted all the relationships in the world.
The poem summarizes the fact that woman is not just an equal counterpart, but the best companion that man can ever have.
The Covai Post spoke with some women who have shared their visions about the future of women and their thoughts on the Women’s Day.
M. Shanmughavadivu, Sai Karangal Organization
“Even big rocks which cannot be broken by weapons can be easily broken through by small roots. Likewise, women can face all challenges and win. They are the angels of god who helped Him create the world. I’m proud to be a woman.”
R. Chandramathi, college student
“Any activity that prevents the growth of women in the society in the name of culture or tradition should be immediately stopped. Only women seem to celebrate Women’s Day. I think both men and women should involve themselves in the celebrations.”
A. Kalaiarasi, working woman
“Even as women are coming out of their shells, there is a still a thought that they belong within the four walls. This is hurting. Women are still being forced into marriage when they attain a certain age limit, and this curtails their dreams and wishes, and nobody bothers. As far as I’m concerned, Women’s Day is when this situation changes.”
K. Priyanka, radio jockey, Suriyan FM
“There is a popular saying that behind the success of every man there is a woman. There are many women in fact – a mother, a sister, a wife and daughter. They all contribute to the success of a man. Women are the essential organs of the society. The society cannot run without a heart. Women are like that. They are important to keep life going.”
C. Priya, college student
“Women are celebrated only on Women’s Day, but they are worthy to be celebrated throughout the year as their contribution is limitless. We largely tend to forget them on other days, which is sad. Women are still facing trouble and women suppression has been misinterpreted as culture. This should change. Well, celebrating Women’s Day when most of the women are still suppressed is ironical.”
L. Christy, Professor
“A woman is strong enough. There is no need to celebrate a specific day for her. She brings growth and love inside the family. Hence every day is her day.”
R. Shubba, college student
“I’m proud to be a woman because women are the only persons who can create another life to this world. A woman can do anything in this world. She can choose her life and decide how she should live. She can also make the selection successful and they have a strong self-belief.”
To conclude, even if most of the women felt that they are given equal importance in jobs; they are not paid well comparatively to their male counterparts. They also said even though the world is moving towards a more liberal society, many are still being suppressed and are fighting to make a mark for themselves.
