Protesting against the sudden decision to shift Dimexon, a diamond factory, from Sulur to Narasimhanaickenpalayam, more than 300 women workers of the factory staged a demonstration in front of their work premises here today.

According to the protesting workers, the company, which had been functioning for nearly 15 years in the area, decided to shift the factory so that it can be linked with another unit of the same group at the new location.

However, the workers are objecting as they cannot travel 40 km one way to reach the office. “Most of the workers reside close by and shifting to Narasimhanaickenpalayam would make it tough for us to reach in time,” said a worker.

Even as union members were holding talks with the management to not shift the factory, the management reportedly put up a notice on the door claiming that the factory had been shut citing revenue issues. “This was done without informing us previously. Now, all of us have become jobless,” said one member.

Police rushed to the spot and to pacify the protesters, but they have claimed that they would not stop until the factory revokes the decision to move. A temporary truce was called and the members claimed that further action would be decided after holding talks with the management and the district administration.
