About 300 workers, a majority of them women, today staged a demonstration in front of the Labour Department office here seeking its intervention to cancel the ‘en masse transfer’ of all the staff of a jewellery and diamonds manufacturing company in Sulur to Narasimhanaickenpalayam from next year onwards.

Dimexon Diamonds Ltd (DDL) has, by its order pasted on the factory premises, asked all the workers to report to duty at Narasimhanaickenpalayam, some 35 kms from the current facility, from January 9, according to sources in CITU, which has taken up the matter.

Upset over the order, the workers gathered in front of the Labour Department office stating that the move will hit their livelihood hard, besides the education of their children.

The intention of the management was to shut down the unit in Sulur, since the women staff may not prefer to go to the unit in Narasimhanaickenpalayam, which is far away from where they live, they said.

The Coimbatore District General Engineering and Mechanical Workers Union of CITU appealed to the workers in other Dimexon units, and other unions and NGOs to take up the cause of the Sulur unit workers, who have been working there for the last 15 years.
