A two-day workshop on automotive styling and design of global brands was conducted by reputed Italian automotive designer Boris Fabris at the DJ Academy of Design (DJAD), Othakalamandapam, on 12 and 13 December.

Boris has worked for automobile design giants such as Fioravanti, Italdesign Giugiaro and Haima Automobile. He has also lectured at institutes such as Auburn University (USA), University of West Bohemia (Czech Republic) and Vallauri Institute of State for Industry and Crafts (Italy).

More than 40 students and professors attended the workshop, which had Jaganathan, industrial designer and alumnus of IDC – IIT Mumbai, as a co-facilitator.

Gayatri, second-year Industrial Design student, DJAD, felt the course made her “much more sensitive to the smaller details of the car. It also gave me a peek into the problems faced while converting a 2D drawing into a 3D model.”

A Nikkesh, fourth-year Production Sandwich student, PSG College of Technology, said he liked the practical method of using sketching for design and gained knowledge on how to view a car from a designer’s perspective.

“Gained more insight about the various types of car designs and development steps, enjoyed free-hand sketching,” said Dr. Rama Thirumurugan, Associate Prof, Mechanical Department, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology.

R Balaji, Asst. Professor, Sri Krishna College of Engineering & Technology, felt that the workshop was very useful; he said he gained knowledge in perspective drawings of automotives.

Dr. Lalitha Devi Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu, Trustee, GKD Charity Trust, distributed participation certificates to the attendees. The event was organised and coordinated by Kanaka Ananth, Faculty & Co-ordinator, DJ Academy of Design.
