The parents of a 28-year-old brain dead man have donated his organs to give new lease of life to five persons.

K Venkatachalam, hailing from Salem district, suffered serious head injuries in a collision between his bike and a private bus on Perundurai Main Road, while he was going home after work on December 7. Though he was taken to the Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) in nearby Erode, he did not respond to treatment and was declared brain dead around 5 pm.

Local Panchayat President Arasimathaiyan advised his father Kandasamy, a farmer, and mother Sarojini, of Dadapuram village in Salem district, to donate his organs, a hospital release said today.

After receiving their consent, a team of doctors from KMCH and the Government Hospital harvested Venkatachalam’s liver, both kidneys and eyes the next day.

The liver and kidneys were transplanted at KMCH, while the eyes were sent to a private hospital in the city.
