Kochi: In a blow to the CPM, the accused in the murder of Youth Congress leader Shuhaib in Kannur today confessed to taking to the crime as directed by a Left party leader.

The 24-year-old Akash Thilankeri, a DYFI activist, told police that the attack was carried out as per the direction of DYFI leaders.

It was to do away with Shuhaib and not confine the attack to physical injuries, police said.

The party promised to protect him from arrests and other complications by presenting dummies. Shuhaib was done to death by CPM leaders at Mattanoor a few days back to settle scores over a previous political rivalry.

The animosity with Shuhaib started after he interfered in the KSU-SFI clash in a school in Edayannoor. Two others arrested are Rajinraj, 26, and Sreejit, 32. He is also accused in the murder of RSS worker Vineesh over a year back.
