Thanjavur: The Motor Accident Case Claims Tribunal here ordered a private insurance company to pay a compensation of Rs. 17.92 lakh to the wife of an agricultural worker who died in a road accident in 2016.

According to prosecution, Kumar (30), an agricultural worker and resident of Pookkollai Street, Mela Vazhuthur Village, Thanajvur district, was returning home in his motorcycle from Aranmanaikurichi village on May 5, 2016 night when a goods carrier dashed against his motorcycle at RYS Cemetery bus stop in Royapettai village on the Kumbakonam-Thiruvaiyaru road.

Kumar died on the spot.

His wife Thavamani (27) filed a petition before the Motor Accident Case Claims Tribunal in Thanjavur praying direction to the insurance company to pay a compensation subsequent to the death of her husband, sole bread-winner of the family.

Principal Sub Judge Poornajaya Anand, delivering his verdict in the case on Wednesday, ordered the Tiruchi branch of ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company to pay Rs 17,92,316 as compensation to Thavamani.

The judge, however, directed the insurance company to pay the compensation after deducting five per cent from the total amount as Kumar had not worn the helmet at the time of the mishap.
