20,000 students take out procession

The demand for lifting the ban on Jallikattu and imposing a ban on PETA gathered momentum, as more people, including general pubic and lawyers, joined the agitation in the City on third day today.

Over 20,000 students from various educational institutions on Wednesday took out a procession from Codissia grounds to VOC Park Ground, covering about five kms, in support of Jallikattu.

Some of the protesters stayed overnight at the venue, braving biting cold and early hour mist, raising slogans against PETA and demanding an ordinance allowing the conduct of Jallikkattu. Lawyers decided to boycott court today and tomorrow and join the agitators.

Majority of the students wearing black shirts pledged not to leave the venue till an ordinance was promulgated, police said.

A group of journalists took out a march from the district collectorate to the venue, extending the support to the traditional sport.

Holidays have been declared to Government Arts and Science colleges, Bharathiar University and also Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here and some private schools, even as the students of Forest College in Mettupalayam joined the protest.

Meanwhile, a student, who was staging an agitation by running on the roof o the train, sustained serious burn injuries, when he came into contact with over head cable of electric train in Salem Railway Station.

The student, yet to be identified, suddenly came into contact with the high tension cable. He was immediately taken to the Government Hospital, police said.
