Kochi: In a major security lapse, an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed close to the fuel tank a few hours before the arrival of Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu at the navy airport at Wellington Island on Tuesday.

The drone was on a surveillance exercise when the incident occurred, navy sources told The Covai Post.

No casualties were reported on ground.

The crash took place at about 10.30 am and Naidu was scheduled to arrive past noon.

The matter assumes significance as it crashed close to aviation fuel tank near the airport.

Preliminary investigation showed that it was technical problem.

On July 27, 2016, a drone of the Indian Navy on a routine training mission from Naval Air Station INS Garuda crashed at sea, nine miles off Kochi.
