Kottayam: Kerala is planning to tie-up with Spain to specialise in the field of organ donation of brain-dead cases.

Kerala Health department will seek the help of Barcelona University to augment its knowledge in this field.

As of now there is lack of coordination between different hospitals on sharing data of brain deaths occuring there. The health department will sign agreement with Donations and Transplantation Institute (DTI) functioning under the university.

Spain tops the table of conducting maximum organ transplantations from brain dead people in the world. DTI meticulously monitors entire process from brain death to surgery.

The Chief Minister and Health Minister have in principle given their nod to the tie-up. Under the first phase, there will be analysis of brain deaths happening in the state and training will be imparted to health workers.

A system will be introduced for transporting organs in an efficient manner. Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Sadanandan held discussions with Spain Ambassador and DTI authorities. Now the government is working on finding funds for the tie up. The options are to bring it under Mrithasanjeevani project or get contributions from members of private hospitals .
