NIA convicts 18 in Wagamon SIMI terror camp

Kottayam: The NIA court in Kochi has convicted 18 persons in the SIMI terror camp case in Wagamon.

The court absolved 17 accused for want of evidence in the arms training case in which there were charges against a total 35 persons, including four from Kerala.

The case pertains to banned outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) conducting arms training from December 10 to 27, 2007, at Kolahalamedu in Wagamon in Idukki on terror activities like using automatic weapons and making of bombs.

Many terror activities, including those in Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Surat and Varanasi, had link to the camp. The sentence will be delivered later.

Similar camps were earlier held at Maninagar in Gujarat, Pithambar in Madhya Pradesh and Gokul Road in Karnataka. The cream of 50 members from these camps was trained in Wagamon.

The Kerala police intelligence wing got the wind of the training due to which it was closed abruptly.
